I wanted to share this with you - it’s a bit of a long one but well worth reading.

It’s not written by me but explains very well the problems (or some of them at least) with relying on meal replacement shakes to lose weight.
I know they seem attractive, I get that I really do. But they do more harm than good and anybody who professes to know anything about nutrition should be ashamed of themselves if they sell people those products.

The insanity of not just Herbalife weight loss products but also many of the better known sports nutrition supplement companies should be ashamed for adding these 2 ingredients in a lot of their products and then promote those products as weight loss products when in reality they are exactly the opposite!

Two of the worst ingredients for inhibiting fat loss are Soy and Fructose yet many supplement companies are using these as their main ingredients in their so call weight loss formulas. This simply shows, in my professional opinion, that these companies are absolutely conning their clients 100% or simply DO NOT understand the physiology of fat loss in humans. And, unfortunately those selling the products have about as much knowledge on nutrition and the physiology for fat loss as a demented cat has.

Let me briefly give you some info on soy protein isolate which is usually the first ingredient on the label meaning it is the main ingredient in the product. Twenty-five grams of soy protein isolate contains 50 – 70 milligrams of isoflavones. Yet it took only 45 milligrams of isoflavones in pre-menopausal women to exert significant biological effects, including a reduction in hormones needed for adequate thyroid function. These effects continued for three months after they stopped eating the soy.

Soy isoflavones are phyto-endocrine disrupters. At dietary levels, they can prevent ovulation and stimulate the growth of cancer cells. Eating as little as 30 grams (about 4 tablespoons) of soy per day can result in hypothyroidism with symptoms of lethargy, constipation, weight gain and fatigue.

Well that’s great you’ve got soy that inhibits thyroid function, which is essential for fat loss and increases oestrogen levels that not only opposes thyroid function even further but also encourages the body to lay fat down. Soy also has many more downsides.

Then to add insult to injury these dishonest companies add fructose as another one of their main ingredients to their weight loss products when in reality by law they should be made to rename these products as weight gainers as soy and fructose is the perfect combo for gaining body fat. Why? Excess fructose consumption is a known cause of insulin resistance and elevated insulin levels in the blood. When this happens, the body has a hard time accessing the stored fat and the brain starts to think that it is hungry. Then we eat more.

Fructose causes resistance to a hormone called leptin, which makes the brain not “see” that the fat cells are full of fat. This leads to increased food intake and decreased fat burning. Fructose does not make you feel satiated after meals. It does not lower levels of the hunger hormone ghrelin and it doesn’t reduce blood flow in the centers of the brain that control appetite. This increases overall food intake.
